U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings has named Holy Name Catholic School in Birmingham a 2008 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School. This award honors public and private elementary,  middle and high schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement.

Holy Name is a Catholic co-educational elementary and middle school with an enrollment of more than 350 children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school was recognized for its record of student achievement and academic results. It is in the top 10 percent of the schools in the nation in reading and mathematics in the last grade tested, as measured by an assessment referenced against national norms.
"We are proud to be the only school this year in the state of Michigan to receive this honor," said Holy Name principal Mary Ann Grady. "This award belongs to the entire Holy Name community—students, teachers, parents, faculty, and staff."
Sr. Mary Gehringer, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Detroit notes Holy Name School deserves the recognition "not only because of its academic excellence, but for its strong Catholic identity."
Holy Name School is one of 43 Catholic schools and 320 schools from across the country that will be honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on October 20 and 21. The school will host a formal local celebration later in the year.

The Archdiocese of Detroit currently has 106 Catholic schools. Six of the schools have been named Blue Ribbon Schools in the past fourteen years.
