Council of Catholic Women Frequently Asked Questions
Who are we? The Council of Catholic Women/Archdiocese of Detroit is a Federation of women's parish groups and Interparochial organizations – i.e. Daughters of Isabella, League of Catholic Women.
What do we do? We promote programs that our affiliates can choose to support such as the Red Cross Blood Banks, Veterans Hospital and the Jail Ministry. We also encourage our affiliates to form a Blood Team to held the Red Cross at Blood Bank Drives.
Are we the League? No. The Detroit League of Catholic Women has a different structure and does such programs that require a professional staff. They work with homeless women and sometimes teenagers. Along with the Downriver Leagues of Catholic Women and the Port Huron League of Catholic Women, the Detroit League has been an affiliate for many years.
How did the Council start? OUR HISTORY: the Bishops of the United States founded The NCCW in 1920. The late Edward Cardinal Mooney established the CCW/AD in 1938. We are affiliated with the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) and the World Union of Catholic Women's Organization (WUCWO) in approximately 67 countries.
