History

  • Sacred Heart Seminary founded in 1919. First graduating class in 1926.
  • Ground broken for current seminary building in 1923, completed in 1924. English Gothic style structure.
  • Twenty-two acre campus at Chicago Boulevard and Linwood, near Boston-Edison Historic District.
  • Refounded as Major Seminary in 1988, when Graduate School of Theology added to the College of Liberal Arts.
  • Institute for Ministry established in 1988 to educate and train individuals for the permanent diaconate and professional lay ecclesial ministry.
  • Largest theological library of any seminary in the State of Michigan.
  • Video conferencing distance learning suite completed in 2003 to expand theological education.
  • Licentiate in Sacred Theology in the New Evangelization approved by the Congregation for Catholic Education in 2004. First of its kind in the United States.
  • Six academic chairs established in 2004.
  • $11.5 million Heartworks Capital Campaign completed in 2006 to fund endowed chairs and distance learning technology, as well as provide financial aid for students.
  • Premier meeting/conference facility: 46,000 people utilized facilities in 2006.
  • Twenty-three alumni elevated to episcopacy.

Enrollment (2006-2007 Academic Year)

  • 93 seminarians enrolled; 37 for the Archdiocese of Detroit.
  • Over 400 lay students enrolled through the Institute for Ministry.
  • Nearly 600 students registered for continuing education courses.

Degree Programs

  • Three undergraduate: Associate of Arts Ministry, Bachelor of Arts Philosophy, and Bachelor of Philosophy.
  • Four graduate: Master of Divinity, Master of Arts Theology, Master of Arts Pastoral Studies, and Bachelor of Sacred Theology.
  • One post-graduate: Licentiate in Sacred Theology.
  • Two diploma programs: Basic Diploma in Pastoral Ministry and Graduate Diploma in Pastoral Ministry.

  • Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, 2004.
  • Association of Theological Schools of the United States and Canada, 2004.
